3D Printers at OS!
Posted 11/03/2015 10:04AM

Oldfields is now the excited owner of two MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printers. A 3D printer produces physical objects from digital files.

Mr. Edwards, Director of Educational Technology, is using one of the 3D printers in the library and has produced some small items to test its capabilities and learn how to use it. He has made chains, a jack-o lantern, and is now making an OS emblem. This emblem will take about 3 hours to print.

The MakerBot can print practical items like pieces for a chessboard, model airplanes and tools. Some possible uses for it in the OS classroom are:

  • Anatomy students can study cross-section models of hearts or other organs.
  • Graphic design students can create 3D versions of their artwork.
  • Geography students can print out topography maps.
  • Students studying flight can make propellers with different angles to test for efficiency.
  •  Physics students can make functional, working, kinematic models in durable ABS plastic.
  • STEM Club members can create working hands which can be donated to kids in third world countries in concert with the “Enabling The Future” program, a global network of volunteers using 3D printing to give the world a “helping hand.”

These two MakerBot 3D Printers were generously donated to the school by current parents, Valerie J. Sill and Dr. G Dennis O'Brien.  Thank you for opening up these wonderful new possibilities for our OS students!
