Faculty Spotlight
Posted 10/29/2018 10:15AM

Oldfields is very fortunate to have Jude Zhu as a faculty member for the past 5 years. In addition to his skill as a math teacher, his undergraduate work in East China Normal University, where he studied teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and his master's in education from University of Pennsylvania, prove incredibly valuable as an English as a Second Language teacher. He and his wife, Wenjie, who is also a teacher at Oldfields, also play a huge role in acclimating our international students from China.

Jude is also the varsity badminton coach and led the OS team to end the season with a championship, as well as runner-up, in the past five years. In addition, he is advisor to the newly formed Math Team. He enjoys leading May Programs such as Remarkable Robotics and Flight.

Learn more about Mr. Zhu in the interview below:

What brought you into the world of education?

I have always wanted to become an educator because young people are shaping our future. That was why I went to a teacher's college in China and continued to study education at UPenn. I have experienced the good and the bad in both education systems as a student and a teacher. I would like to select the essence and discard the dregs.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am an avid motorsports fan. I started watching Formula 1 races in 8th grade and have never stopped. Over the years, my interest in automobiles in general has grown tremendously. I am probably too old to start my racing career, but I definitely want to be an automotive journalist at some point in my life.

What do you love about Oldfields?

The possibilities are endless. If you want to find your passion and pursue your dream, Oldfields will provide you with all the support and resources. This is true for both students and faculty.

What is your favorite quote?

To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth.
To secure life and fortune for the people.
To continue lost teachings for past sages.
To establish peace for all future generations.

—Zhang Zai (Northern Song Dynasty)

What advice would you give to the students?

I have two pieces of advice: 1) Never say no to learning. Even if you feel it is not relevant, you are creating small dots. You may not be able to see through them right away. But when you have a great many and connect them, it is the most beautiful thing you will ever see. 2) Remember learning is fun! However, the fun of learning usually lies not in its process, but mostly in the fulfillment upon the completion of this process.

Great words of wisdom from our very own Mr. Jude.
