Oldfields' STEAM Seminar
Posted 09/19/2018 12:53PM

On Sunday, September 23, at 1 p.m., the Oldfields STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) Committee was proud to welcome one of our alumnae, Dr. Jessie Isaacs '05, back to campus to share her insights into a career in S.T.E.A.M. She was joined by Dr. Megan Bosmans, who specializes in physical therapy. Both of these accomplished young women brought a current perspective on what it takes to pursue a career in science to the OS students who attended the event.

Dr. Isaacs is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School. Following graduation, she completed a yearlong fellowship in general dentistry and oral medicine at the Perry Point Veterans Administration Medical Center. In June 2018, she obtained her Certificate in Orthodontics from New York University Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, where she was chief resident. She now treats patients at the dental firm of Isaacs, Nawy, Stern and Isaacs Orthodontics in the Baltimore area.

Dr. Isaacs shares that her time at Oldfields School set her on the path of understanding the power of education and willpower. As a high school student, Jessie did not know exactly where her studies would lead, but she understood that giving her best effort would keep many options open. She maintained impressive grades in college and received a bachelor of science degree from The College of Charleston.

Eventually, Jessie chose a career in dentistry, but her journey was really just beginning. After electing to specialize in orthodontics, the disappointment of an initial rejection only strengthened her drive to succeed. When she was denied entrance to the orthodontic program of her choice, she learned some hard life lessons. Dr. Isaacs was disappointed, but not deterred, and spent the next year as a post graduate resident in general dentistry and oral medicine at the Perry Point VA Medical Center. She reapplied to NYU Langone, was accepted, and was offered an orthodontic residency in their outstanding, clinically-based program. The extra year before entering her NYU orthodontic program gave her valuable experiences in dentistry and, more importantly, strengthened her resolve to become an orthodontist.

Our second speaker, Dr. Megan Maier Bosmans, received her doctorate in physical therapy from Lynchburg College in 2014. She went on to receive her Certificate as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in 2018 and specializes in orthopedic and pediatric treatment. She has experience in the areas of instrument assisted soft tissue massage, return to sport care, and headache treatment. the girls got to experience some of her techniques first hand.

We invite all students, parents, and guests to attend this first in a series of STEAM seminars. Oldfields believes that one of our responsibilities as educators of young women is to create an environment in and out of the classroom which inspires confidence and encourages academic risk in all subject areas, along with fostering an interest in STEAM fields. Developing young women with a love for learning in all facets of education is essential in today's world.
