May Program 2018
Posted 06/29/2018 09:44AM

As one of Oldfields' signature programs, May Program is a treasured highlight of the school year. Every year, each student chooses one of the many diverse programs taught by our committed faculty. The faculty often shares a personal passion or area of expertise outside the traditional curriculum, and both teacher and student alike grow from this in-depth, hands-on experience. The self-discovery that occurs as they experience different cultures, try things they only dreamed of, and forge new friendships through real-world experiences, enriches their high school education and often changes their lives! Upon completion, all the students participate in May Sharing where they present their experiences, insights, and lessons learned. The girls' presentations evoke laughter, chills, awe, and even a few tears.

While two of the off-campus groups discovered new passions outside of the country, five took the east coast by storm; conquering Washington DC, New York City, Lake Placid, Baltimore, and most all of Maryland! The final eight on-campus programs (with frequent day trips to enhance the experience) also took experiential learning to a whole new level.

Honestly, the fabulous moments are too many to many to share – rafting in the Amazon basin, helping deliver a baby horse, walking across the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, learning water rescue, playing games with a French host family, feeding a baby sloth, piloting a plane, making ice cream using liquid nitrogen, building rockets and robots, crying at the 9/11 Memorial, creating a real working company, visiting the Supreme Court, conversing with a Homeland Security refugee officer – the list goes on and on. We hope you enjoy this video that gives a glimpse into the magic that is May Program.

P.S. This video was created by alumna, Elyse Bruzdzinski '17. Where did she get such excellent editing skills? From a May Program of course! While a student at OS, she participated in Digital Storytelling. Now she is using those skills as a paid intern for Oldfields Communication Department. Thank you to Elyse, and to all the students who forwarded her photos and videos!
