Introduction to Dance
This class will introduce basic elements in the technique of dance. In this course students will simultaneously learn the various disciplines of jazz, modern, ballet, and musical theater while exploring the history, philosophy, and vocabulary of these art forms. We will look at early social forms of dance, the comparison between Japanese and European classical dance, the rebellion to ballet, the evolution of dance in film, and where did hip-hop come from? This class includes choreography and performances in the Winter and Spring Dance Concerts. Introduction to Dance is a prerequisite for Intermediate and Advanced level courses.
Text required: Appreciating Dance, fifth edition.
Dress requirement: Black tank leotard. Shoes will be determined per class. Each class will use the same shoes for performances, whether that is black jazz shoes or flesh/pink-colored ballet shoes.
