OS on Stage with Rachel Platten
OS on Stage with Rachel Platten

Oldfields was a sponsor of Towson University’s Mistletoe Meltdown concert on December 11, a terrific opportunity to get the Oldfields name in front of hundreds of teenage girls and their parents. This sponsorship came with a giant perk – ten lucky Oldfields girls were invited to be the back-up singers for Rachel Platten as she performed her new single, Stand by You. Rachel’s former hit single, Fight Song, has an extremely positive theme that has inspired many of our girls, so they were thrilled to sing with her during her live performance. “Blind” auditions were held to select the ten Oldfields students. They weren’t told what they were trying out for! It was tough to choose the lucky ten, but the good news is that all the girls who tried out were given free tickets to the concert.
The experience was beyond amazing! You couldn’t watch without getting chills or possibly even shedding a tear or two. Oldfields is a place that strives to give girls opportunities they may never have dreamed of. This was definitely one of those moments. Austin ’16 shared, “When Rachel turned around and sang to us, I was electrified. I couldn’t believe I was there, on stage, with Rachel Platten!”

The Oldfields group performed so well in rehearsal that Rachel’s road manager from Columbia Records asked them to tape a bridge he needed for a recording of Fight Song to be played at this year’s Pro Bowl. Austin ’16, one of the student leaders of Oldfields a capella group, Dubious, said it was one of the most magical moments of the entire experience because the girls had to rise to the occasion and work together to perfect the harmonies. It was scary – but exciting! This recording will be used when Rachel performs at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii on January 31, 2016. It may only be ten seconds of singing, but will be heard by millions of viewers.

Another special part of the evening was meeting and taking photos with Rachel, who was kind, gracious, and friendly. It was refreshing to meet a performer who is a positive role model for our young women, and it was a night our girls will never forget. Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible!
