Travels, Journeys, and Voyages in Literature

Single Semester Course

In this class, we will focus on how, when, where, and why characters move. We'll explore mostly fictional accounts of characters who must travel into and through a variety of nationalities and cultures. We'll ask questions such as "What are the cultural and historical factors that necessitate these moves?", "What is the effect on the people involved?", and "What role does family play in these types of decisions?" This course will be discussion-based. Students are expected to complete the readings carefully and ready to share questions, impressions, and ideas. Additionally, students should expect to express their ideas about these texts in a variety of written modes, both formal and informal.
