AP Biology
AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course. This course’s foundation rests on the four Big Ideas:
- The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
- Biological systems utilize energy to grow, reproduce, and maintain life.
- Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes.
- Biological systems interact with other biological systems.
During the year, students will study eight principal themes: biochemistry, cellular biology, energetics, cell communication and division, heredity, gene expression, evolution, and ecology. Emphasis is placed on extensive laboratory experiences that apply scientific knowledge. Students will write formal lab reports and analyze scientific data throughout the course. AP Biology students should expect to complete reading assignments outside of class related to scientific articles and participate in research-based projects. The equivalent of a two-semester college-level Biology course, AP Biology is designed to prepare students for the AP examination in May and further study in science.
Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry*
