Dear Parents,
Joe Doherty Academic FAQs When is the last day of school? The last day of school is Friday, May 15.
Teachers will be available from May 18-22 to work with students who need additional time to complete their studies. In addition, students in Honors classes may use this time to get extra help from their teacher to prepare for the AP test. Any student wishing to request an extension must reach out to their teacher and Director of Academics and Programmatic Affairs Joe Doherty by Monday, May 11.
Yes, a student can opt to have her classes graded with the Pass/Fail model. A Pass will not count toward the student's GPA while a Fail will have the same weight on GPA as the traditional grading scale. Students wishing to exercise the Pass/Fail option will need to have a parent or guardian reach out to Mr. Doherty. In an effort to provide students an opportunity to acclimate to the remote learning platform, requests for Pass/Fail will begin on May 1 and end on May 15.
Will we have any days off before the end of the academic year? There are two days built into the calendar that are "free days." These fall on Friday, April 17, and Friday, May 1. Please use these days to unplug, recharge, and have fun! Please note that Senior Speeches will still take place on these days.
Are we still having final exams? Oldfields will not have final exams. However, teachers will still give year-end tests (traditional and alternative summative assessments). The tests only count toward the third term and are not calculated into the GPA.
Unfortunately, there will not be a May Program this academic year. The Business Office is in the process of reviewing all payments received from families for each of the May Programs, as well as all non-refundable expenses that have been paid for each program. Once this has been determined, the Business Office will send out an updated statement to each family that will provide the details on any credits to be applied to the student's debit account. At that time, parents may request a refund of the available balance.
The ceremonial NHS Induction will take place in September 2020. However, the Term III Awards Ceremony will be canceled.
Seniors who have not completed their community service hours will have this graduation requirement waived.
Athletics, Co-curricular, and Activities FAQs
All Oldfields team participation in IAAM Conference has been canceled. However, Oldfields Athletics has gone remote with live workouts offered twice a week via Zoom. Posted workouts are also available on the Athletics Class Pages twice a week, and there is a "Friday Challenge" that earns points for the Green or White Team upon students' completion. All workouts can be done in a small space at home.
The cast and crew of Mamma Mia, along with the show's director, musical director, and choreographer, plan to highlight key musical numbers throughout the remote learning experience. The cast and crew will be provided the opportunity to meet over Zoom to prepare at the conclusion of the remote academic day.
In addition, Spring Dance Concert performers have been contacted about the plan moving forward for the end of the year. If you have any questions regarding participation in any of the Performing Arts spring events, please email Director of Performing Arts Carrie Hammond.
The Riding Program will continue their Zoom meetings (links in the POW) on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. A wide variety of speakers, including many well-known clinicians, and activities are already scheduled.
We will honor our Seniors with a virtual Senior Day celebration on Wednesday, May 6th.
Student Life and End-of-Year Traditions
As of now, per orders from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, campus is closed to all but essential employees. We will be in touch with details and options for boarders in terms of how their dorm rooms will be packed. We will also be in touch with day students and keep you informed as to when you can come to campus to retrieve your belongings from your lockers.
The Green and White competition will continue as normal. There will be small virtual competitions throughout the remainder of the year to add to each team's points. Good luck, and may the best team win!
Will we still have an Alumnae Induction Ceremony?
