Dear Oldfields Alumnae,
Don't know which way you were rooting for the groundhog, but hope your February is off to a happy and healthy start. Selfishly speaking, I usually opt for a few more weeks of winter, as it gives me some extra "good hair" days that are also allergy free!
I have just returned from three days at Oldfields for Board meetings, and I have to say it is a privilege to serve alongside such smart, caring, and dedicated trustees, faculty, and staff. David Perfield's leadership, while respectful of our past, is heading us in the right direction for the future.
We all have roughly 80 days to get ourselves booked in for the first Alumnae Weekend of the decade! We will celebrate all alumnae, and especially those whose classes end in 0 or 5, but this year there's an extra reason for all of you to come. We will be honoring two very special Oldfields icons; Ansley Smithwick and Barbara Latrobe P'97, '99, both of whom have decided to retire at the end of this school year. Combined, these wonderful women have devoted 70 years of service to Oldfields, and if that isn't reason to celebrate, then I don't know what is! Let's give them a send-off to remember!
We will begin our goodbyes to Ansley and Barb at a celebratory dinner on the evening of Saturday, April 25, during Alumnae Weekend 2020! So dust off your party shoes, because having you there will surely mean the world to them and will make it a night they'll never forget!
More information about the weekend and hotel accommodations (special rates can be found at the Residence Inn or Delta Hotel) will be coming in the next few weeks, so check the Oldfields Alumnae web pages often!
We love hearing from you, so please stay in touch!
Thank you for all you do for Oldfields, Lulu Laubenstein '72

Alumnae Spotlight Sue Lloyd Scannell '61 Shows her Largeness of Heart When you meet Sue, you are blown away by the energy with which she approaches every situation. From moving six times in six years in her early marriage, to going back to get her master's in education while a mother to three small children, followed a few years later by a degree in bio-medical engineering, all while teaching religion classes and acting in children's theatre! And she has not slowed down yet. At a time when most people are kicking back and relaxing, Sue is busier than ever.
Sue shares some of her activities: "I think Oldfields' motto "Courage, Humility, and Largeness of Heart" may have shaped many of my activities past and present, such as volunteering as an EMT and riding on local ambulance calls for 28 years! When it became more difficult for me to get up in the driver's seat, I found a new outlet for my time during retirement. I joined an organization called "Staying Put" in New Canaan, CT, which helps people stay in their own homes by helping with anything from changing a light bulb to shoveling snow. The biggest need is for drivers to medical appointments, hair appointments, grocery stores, and our local community center. I mostly help with driving and fixing computers, television remotes, printers, and all things technical! I learn a lot from helping others. I love getting to know the interesting people I drive. They are so proud of what they have done and pleased to be asked to share it."
Oldfields Spiritware The Oldfields Parent Association has teamed up with Big Dipper Graphics to offer a selection of Oldfields Spirit Wear and wanted to share this opportunity with alumnae, too. Below is a link where you can place your order. Please place your orders by February 14, 2020.
Oldfields Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. On the 25th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s National Day of Service, Oldfields is proud to say we honored his call to action by canceling classes, loading up the entire community on buses, and spending a rewarding day working alongside our neighbors in Baltimore City. We partnered with The 6th Branch, a pro-active organization that brings together service-minded veterans and civilians to volunteer in their local communities. One of their major initiatives is to provide vital community green space, something of which we have such a beautiful abundance on our campus, by cleaning up vacant lots and transforming them into areas for parks and urban gardens for local residents.
Oldfields Dance Company Accepted into 2020 Maryland Dance Alliance Gala Congratulations, Oldfields Dance Company, on being accepted into the 2020 Maryland Dance Alliance Gala! After working tirelessly on a new piece and submitting a video in November, these young ladies were selected to perform at the Gordon Center in Owings Mills, MD at 7 p.m. on February 28, 2020. Out of 45 submissions from the entire state, only 20 were accepted! This is a huge honor, and we are very proud of Performing Arts Director and Director of Dance Department Carrie Hammond and her team's hard work!
