Dear Oldfields Alumnae and Friends,
With the holidays fast approaching, I hope you have all had time to see the wonderful new Oldfields video that was put together by our Communications Department! I especially appreciate hearing the girls talk about our School, not from a script, but from the heart.
Their same feelings and words about Oldfields could be spoken by almost every generation of Oldfields alumnae! One of the most heart-warming responses to the video came from schoolmate Tracey Hope Shor '74. Her thoughts and feelings are beautifully expressed, so I hope you will take a minute to read Tracey's writings...
"The best all-girls boarding school in America! For those of us fortunate enough to attend it was one of the greatest gifts our parents ever gave us, and for me, it was my second home for four years—and the best four years of my life because of the support of faculty that went above and beyond their job description. The students who went there understood each other's issues and supported each other through good times and hard times.
I'm so grateful for all that I learned there about life. Who I am today is because of Oldfields. My aunt and uncle who, both with careers and busy schedules, could not have raised me without Oldfields. The greatest gift you can give humanity is to make a positive difference in the life of a child, and together with Oldfields, they did that for me.
Oldfields continues to do that with every girl who graduates from the School. It's a magical place with a very positive environment and fabulously supportive faculty. If you want to give a gift that keeps on giving to a child or grandchild, give them the gift of four years at Oldfields."
May Tracey's words and your memories of Oldfields keep you warm this winter. No matter what holiday you celebrate this month—Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and so many more—I hope your holiday is filled with fun and family.
Remember, if you know a future Oldfields girl, please pass her name along to the Admission Office—and as always, your gifts help us build a strong Oldfields that is ready to take on the future!
Take care, and thank you for your support, Lulu Laubenstein '72

Alumna Lyse Wagner '17 Competes in NCAA Field Hockey Tournament Remember Lyse Wagner '17 when she played field hockey for Oldfields? She was back in Maryland to play for Denison in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, November 14, at Johns Hopkins. Denison field hockey lost a hard fought battle against Tuffs University, but OS was there to cheer her on! Read more about the game here. Photo by Jace Delgado
Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference Thank you, Gilman School, for hosting this year's wonderful BSDLC (Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference). Over 400 students participated in the event, a day of student-led workshops, live music, and keynote speakers covering important issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Alumnae Spotlight Jenaba Sow '17 Shows Her Largeness of Heart Jenaba Sow '17 on the far right Many of our recent alumnae have selected STEAM majors, such as environmental science, pre-med, nursing, and engineering, with plans to use their skills to help solve the world's most pressing problems. One such student is Jenaba Sow '17 who is now in her third year at Howard University majoring in software engineering. She plans to use her expertise to help marginalized communities, providing them with the tools of technology and computer skills which are needed to elevate them out of poverty. And she's already started! Jenaba participates in Howard University's Alternative Spring Break program (HUASB) which is committed to serving communities in need and involving students in meaningful service. HUASB connects students to the significance of their education and prepares them to be servant leaders for the nation and the world.
Instead of going to a Florida beach and having a traditional spring break, in 2017 Jenaba worked in a coastal town in Florida that was hard hit by the 2017 hurricanes. She worked in a program for children who were dismissed from traditional school, teaching them computer skills and providing general tutoring, but most importantly, showing them by example what can be achieved. In 2018 she was back at it—this time going to Puerto Rico to provide hurricane clean-up and food distribution following Hurricane Maria. Jenaba said that Oldfields' community service requirement definitely planted some seeds. She remembers trips with Ms. Christine Gilmore to support an organization called Marathon Kids which helped students work at their own pace to run or walk four marathons so kids could reap the benefits of training, rewards, tools, and resources to keep them moving. Keep up the good work, Jenaba!
