Oldfields Takes a Trip to Dallas!

On our trip to Dallas last week, Head of School Ansley Smithwick and Director of Development Anne Finney were treated to cocktails in the beautiful, art-filled apartment of Board member Liza Lee and her husband Will, before a lovely dinner at Parigi's, a fabulous local restaurant. Ever heard of the Lee Bros. and their cookbooks? Guess what? They are Liza and Will's sons!

Amy Ford Prestidge '91 along with Dealey Campbell '98 and her sister Amy Campbell '04 joined Ansley Smithwick and Anne Finney for a delicious lunch at Café Pacific in Dallas on February 21 during our visit there. What great fun to catch up with three such engaging alumnae!

Mary and Gary Machak, parents of Megan '15, generously hosted a party for Oldfields in Dallas on February 21 at their beautiful house. We've been lucky to see Megan back at Oldfields several times since she graduated; it was great to catch up with Mary and Gary and all the other guests!

Oldfields Visits Houston!

Liza Easton '80 kindly hosted Head of School Ansley Smithwick and Director of Development Anne Finney in Houston on February 22 at a delightful party for Oldfields. We were thrilled to see current parent LaShonda Davis, mother of Kennedy Green '19, and Mary Catherine Henderson '13, and it was also a special treat to see Nell Richardson and her husband Sidney Buchanan. Nell and her husband, Jim Richardson, came to Oldfields in 1969 and remained for many years. The James M. Richardson Endowed Chair for English was established in 1986.

OS Basketball Team Makes it to The Championships!

This team gave us such an exciting ride! Under the leadership of Coach Stephanie Hill, Assistant Coach Bez Wallace, and team captains D'Naisha Bellamy-Greene '19, Joy Brown-Bryant '18, and Morgan Gause '19, Varsity Basketball went 12-3 in the regular season. The momentum continued into the playoffs, leading to the championship round where we earned First Runner Up for the first time since entering the IAAM Conference 19 years ago. WE ARE SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!

Oldfields Faculty Illuminated
Spotlight on Ryan Tanner-Read

Ryan completed his undergraduate work in history and literature at American University, where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He then earned his MA in History at the College of William and Mary, where he was also PhD ABD in American History.

After teaching at William and Mary for three years, Ryan joined Oldfields to teach history in 2014. Since then, he has taught across the History Department curriculum. In 2015 and 2016, he received McColl grants, which he used to redesign the curriculum for International Politics Honors and create curricula for World History Honors and US government and Politics Honors. His wife, Ali Goldstein, joined the English faculty in 2015, and they now live together on campus in Carroll House. In his spare time, he is a gardener and music lover.

What brought you into the world of education?
I started teaching at the college level when I went to work on my PhD in American History. I taught both world and American history at William and Mary. Then, I took a year off from teaching at the college level to try teaching at Oldfields and see if I wanted to remain in higher education. I discovered that I would rather be in secondary education where I have more chance to know my students closely and tailor my classes to their interests and strengths.
