As the leaves begin to fall outside our classroom windows, the magic continues! Here are a few academic highlights in which your girls have participated during the past month:
- Forensics class got intense! After learning about crime scene evidence, procedures, and eyewitness testimony in Taylor Montgomery's class, students performed a crime scene lab complete with our very own Carrie Hammond as a suspect and Hannah '18 as the victim.
- In the interest of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), the Photography classes and the Government and Politics Honors class took advantage of our close proximity to Washington DC and went on field trips to the National Air and Space Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the National Museum of American History.
- As a fun activity to review the coordinate plane system, students in Gabby Davis' Algebra classes used technology to play the popular game, Battleship, with their parents during Fall Family Weekend.
- The Diversity Committee, led by Ryan Tanner-Read and Anna Littlefield, kicked off their diversity discussion series with two very powerful discussions. The first insightful, civil, and well-attended discussion was in response to the events in Charlottesville. The success of the Charlottesville discussion brought even more students out to the second discussion concerning refugees that was led by visiting alumna Jaquette McGhee '98. Jaquette is currently a refugee officer in the Department of Homeland Security. Read more about her presentation >
- Fifteen students gave a presentation to the Oldfields Board to show how the all-school theme, "Finding Magic in the Moment," is incorporated in and reflected through student life. As they shared their passion, enthusiasm, and appreciation for the opportunities Oldfields School has given them, it was obvious to everyone that our caring community and cultural immersion play a paramount role in each student's self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-empowerment leading to an authentic life.
We can't wait to see what next month holds – besides exams!
