Helen Elizabeth Travers, known as Miss Herky (short for “Miss Hercules”) since her teenage years for her prodigious strength and athletic ability, arrived in Glencoe by train to become a faculty member in the fall of 1942. She wore many hats throughout her years at Oldfields, including history teacher, director of the athletic program, dean of students, dorm parent, postmistress, coach, and student advisor, but her greatest contribution to the school was as a role model for students and colleagues alike. Miss Herky held a place of honor and love in the hearts of all who knew her during her forty year tenure at Oldfields, and her legend has endured here on campus. The School Store is named in her honor as a timeless memorial to one who gave so much of herself to the Oldfields students and faculty for so many years.
Whether you’re online or on campus, "Herky's" offers a variety of exciting apparel and gift items for students, alumnae, parents, and guests. The store is open from 9:45 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday (when school is in session). |
