Athletic Requirements and Philosophy
Oldfields School was one of the first girls' schools to pioneer an athletic program in 1878. The School remains committed to the integration of athletics as a vital component of each student's experience. In keeping with the philosophy and mission of the School, the Athletic Department emphasizes the value of each individual and respect for others. We stress teamwork, sportsmanship, personal commitment, goal setting, and an appreciation for lifetime activity.

Oldfields School competes in the Independent Athletic Association of Maryland offering nine varsity and eight junior varsity teams. Squad III teams are offered when there is interest in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse and emphasize learning and refining the necessary skills for these sports, and competitions are primarily intramural. Other offerings also include fitness, yoga, dance, and riding. The after-school dance program accommodates dancers from beginning to advanced levels in a variety of different dance techniques. There are also opportunities for student performance and choreography.

Each student is required to be involved in an athletic or co-curricular offering on campus each of the three seasons. All offerings meet five days a week and are considered regular school commitments. All students must participate in one athletic team option during her first year at Oldfields. For ninth graders and for all new students, that should take place during the fall season.

After a successful debut in 2004-2005, Oldfields now offers co-curricular options for our students in lieu of participating on an athletic team. Students may now pursue an interest in Community Service, Drama, Fine Arts, or Yoga.
