The Tradition Continues:

Celebrating 100 Nights 'til Graduation!

Image

Oldfields loves tradition, and the 100 Nights Dinner for our seniors begins a magical march of special traditions (Junior/Senior Picnic, Garden Party, Alumnae Induction, etc.)  that culminate on June 3rd with Graduation! Interim Head of School Ansley Smithwick was one of the founders of the first 100 Nights back in 1988.

This year, the seniors began with a special dinner, followed by the opportunity to ask questions of recent graduates, Ashley Lewis '10 and Jamila Hubbard '11. After a slide presentation from the Junior Class, all the girls went to the Head's house to write their 10 year prediction letters which will be opened at their 10th year reunion! A chocolate fondue fountain topped off the evening. Get ready world, the Class of 2017 is on its way!

Awesome Arts and Athletics

Dance opportunities abound! Not only did the dance program treat the OS community to an amazing Winter Dance Concert, but the OS Dance Company and Dream Catchers shared their talents off campus as well! Our dancers performed in a benefit concert to support the Alvin Ailey Summer Dance Camp at Towson University. They also were invited to perform Friday, March 3rd, with Maryland Dance Alliance. Sharing the love!

We are so proud of our great group of riders who competed at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association Regionals this past month, Frances '18, Mary Hannah '19, and Kayla '18! Congratulations to Mary Hannah '19 on her qualification for Zones! Special thanks to Emma '18 for coming along to provide extra support and help.

Shout out to our indoor track champions! Jincan "Iris" '18 placed 3rd in the long jump at the IAAM Conference B Championships, and Hannah '18 placed 3rd in the 3200 meters.

A special thanks to the varsity basketball team for an exciting season and post season. You all were amazing to watch and made Oldfields proud!

Academic Update

Image

As you know, Oldfields strives to ignite intellectual curiosity in and out of the class room by providing a multitude of unique academic experiences. Here are just a few of the engaging events the girls participated in during the past month:

  • The popularity of the salon style classes, open discussions on the issues of the day popular in France during the Enlightenment, led the 9th grade to host a few of their own!
  • 10th grade English classes made memory boxes and timelines based on Elie Weisel's novel, Night.
  • Several history classes took a field trip to the National Museum of American History & Culture.
  • The 10th grade visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.
  • Oldfields' chapter of the National Honor Society began their peer tutoring program.
  • A record 28 girls participated in Model UN held in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins University from February 9-12.
  • The statistics class conducted a survey on diversity issues at Oldfields and shared the results at  Morning Meeting.
  • Laura Tierny, social media consultant with
The Social Institute, led an extremely relevant  conversation on how to navigate social media as a teen girl and make it a more positive experience. Her interactive assembly was followed up by smaller group discussions with students as well as faculty.
